So Its the End of the Decade...

Every so often that realization pops in my head and I start going through my favorite albums. A decade is a long time and you really have to reach back a bit. Its impossible not to overlook a few. Remember when Discovery first came out. Kid A? I have a couple albums I know would go on my list, and I'll throw those down now, but there's plenty more thinking to be done. Hopefully we can rediscover some of the hallmarks of the decade.

In no particular order (though I may try to order them later).

Daft Punk - Discovery
Radiohead - Kid A
Animal Collective - Sung Tongs
Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion
Brian Wilson - Smile
The While Stripes - White Blood Cells
Kanye West - The College Dropout
Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
LCD Soundsystem - LCD Soundsystem / Sound of Silver
The Avalanches - Since I Left You

There are a lot more in my head, but i'll be plopping em' down as I convince myself they belong on the list.

Re: So Its the End of the Decade...

Every time I realize we're about to leave the 2000's it BLOWZ MY MIND. What do we call this decade when we talk about it in retrospect? The oh's? The two-thousands? The oughts?

I'll get my list put together tonight

Re: So Its the End of the Decade...

My Top 5

1 Black Dice - Broken Ear Record
2 Double Leopards - Halve Maen
3 Wolf Eyes - Burned Mind
4 Venetian Snares - Songs About My Cats
5 M.I.A. - Kala

Sonic Youth is my all time favorite band, so everything they release goes to a list of favorites even though they're not groundbreaking, for the future of music anyway, for about 15 years.

Kid A is superb. Because Radiohead was already huge before releasing it I'm not putting at the Top 5. I know it doesn't make much sense, more like an iconoclastic kind of thing. But it's one of my all time favorite albums.

Some brilliant stuff in no order

Charalambides - Joy Shapes
Ladytron - 604
El-P - Fantastic Damage
Boris - Pink
Xiu Xiu - A Promise
Sunburned Hand of the Man - Magnetic Drugs
Chicks on Speed - Will Save Us All!
Vibracathedral Orchestra - Dabbling With Gravity and Who You Are
Magik Markers - I Trust My Guitar, ETC

There are more, that's for sure.

That idea is pretty much what comprised my whole list. I think I'll go back and edit it.

In the spirit of stuff that was truly groundbreaking and belongs on a list of such records from the 00's, I can only select a few from my list:

The Black Keys - The Big Come Up
The White Stripes - White Blood Cells

I really think these two bands did a ton for bringing skillful blues guitar work back to it's rightful place in music. Simple, quick riffs aren't always bad, but were definitely over-saturating the market. The fact that both bands have only two members also says a lot, considering the amount of good noise they can make.

Lil' Wayne - The Carter 2
Lil' Wayne - Dedication 2

The Carter 2 was Wayne just starting to kick into his prime. You really can almost hear it clicking in during the album. The next Carter would go on to be the biggest album of 2008.

Wayne really made the hip-hop mixtape amazingly huge and set the bar very high with Dedication 2. Great stuff, cover to cover, and it really wasn't sold in stores at all. It kinda made all other rappers go 'if he's making stuff this good when he isn't even working on a full-blown album, what's his album gonna be like?'. I love the intimidation by sheer quality factor of it.

Re: So Its the End of the Decade...

In the tradition of High Fidelity, I'll go with my top five mostly because its so damn hard and probably unfair to rank one's expressions.

5. Strokes - This is it
4. Panda Bear - Person Pitch
3. Radiohead - Kid A
2. Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
1. Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion

Honorable mentions:
Kanye West - College Dropout
LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver
Sufjan Stevens - Illinois

If 2001 was the new millennium, then isn't 2011 the new decade?
